Platform X, formerly known as Twitter, is preparing to deploy a new feature called Smart Cashtags. This innovation will allow users to follow stock and cryptocurrency prices in real time directly in their news feed. The announcement was made by Nikita Bier, product manager at X, on February 14, 2026.
This initiative is part of the platform's strategy to combine social networks, finance and commerce in a multifunctional application.
Smart Cashtags use the cashtag system already used to identify financial assets with the dollar sign followed by the asset symbol, for example $BTC for Bitcoin or $AAPL for Apple. What's new is that these cashtags become interactive and provide real-time information such as prices, charts, and market trends. Users will also be able to view mentions and discussions around these assets without leaving the platform, turning the news feed into an integrated financial information space.
This system also makes it possible to clarify ambiguities when certain symbols may designate several different assets. Each Smart Cashtag will be directly associated with a specific asset or smart contract, making it more reliable to read and track.
When the user clicks on a Smart Cashtag, they will be able to see the live price, price changes, chart history, and other financial indicators. The feature also brings together publications and mentions relating to the asset, allowing market sentiment to be monitored. The data feed is designed to work almost in real time, even for less liquid assets or decentralized cryptocurrencies, greatly expanding market coverage.
The platform plans to add “Buy” and “Sell” buttons alongside financial information. These buttons will not directly process transactions on X. Transactions will be carried out through partner services or external brokers. This approach simplifies the user experience while remaining compliant with local financial regulations. The platform thus becomes an interface for accessing data and initiating transactions without assuming the legal responsibilities of a broker.
The introduction of Smart Cashtags is part of X's vision to become a multi-functional application, integrating communication, financial information and trade.
The platform seeks to capitalize on its position as a vector of financial information to transform conversations and mentions into actionable tools for monitoring markets and making decisions. This feature could also attract a new audience interested in financial information and increase user engagement around specialized content.
Integrating financial data and opportunities to initiate transactions into a social network poses several challenges. The platform must comply with local laws concerning financial services and ensure the protection of users. The information must be reliable to avoid any manipulation or dissemination of misinformation that could influence the markets. The platform must also clarify its responsibility by remaining a simple interface for accessing data and triggering transactions without directly executing exchanges.
According to Nikita Bier, the public deployment of Smart Cashtags is planned in the coming weeks, with the objective of going online in February 2026 after a phase of adjustments based on user feedback.
Smart Cashtags represent an important step in the convergence of social networks and finance. By integrating real-time market data and trade initiation interfaces into the news feed, X is transforming its application into a versatile space where it is possible to follow, discuss and act on financial markets. This strategy aims to make the platform a super-application combining social, finance and trade while facing challenges related to regulation, security and user protection.
